Doubt whom you will, but never yourself. -Christine Bovee

"Oh my god," Sascha groaned as Breaker Street trailed backstage after their first concert. "That was awful."

Rory blinked in mild surprise. Apparently their young keyboardist had expected a better reception. "The crowd wasn't all that bad, lass."

Her eyebrows arched in incredulity. "Are you kidding me? They were so god-awfully bored! And the hecklers--"

Kreske hooted with laughter, still spinning his drumsticks through his fingers. "That? That wasn't heckling, Sascha sweet. That was just a few catcalls."

Sascha did not look appeased. )

I've given my characters a healthy dose of Veritaserum and now they have to tell the truth. What does this mean for you? Ask my characters questions about anything and everything and they will truthfully answer it. So, go ahead and ask what you want. He can't beat around the bush with half-truths.

I know you think that I shouldn't still love you,
Or tell you that.
But if I didn't say it, well I'd still have felt it
where's the sense in that?

I promise I'm not trying to make your life harder
Or return to where we were …

Rory had been sure that the hardest part of getting to Venice to see Pippa would be cutting loose from Breaker Street's schedule of promotional appearances for their debut album. The head of PR for Serptichore Records had indeed gotten in a fume about his request … more of a demand, really … which the singer bypassed by going straight to the top, namely Robbie Fellowes' office. Rory had been prepared to argue, cajole, insist, anything necessary to get his way with the man he'd known all his life as Robin Goodfellow. Robin, however, had listened to his explanation with narrowed eyes, and then shocked the hell out of him. )

Over in biggest brother Anraí's journal, you will find a series of drabbles commemorating a very special moment for the MacEibhir family. Enjoy!

“How the hell did they score this spot? What's their name again?”

The sounds of stage setup and an impatient/curious Times Square crowd surrounded Rory Stone, but Sam Champion had a trained broadcaster's voice and the púca had supernaturally keen hearing. Though spoken quietly, the Good Morning America weatherman's words carried clearly to Rory's ears, pulling his attention from preparations for his band's first nationally televised performance.

They're called Breaker Street ... )

Rory took another pass through his living room to ensure that the premises looked at least decent, sprinkled with a little comfortable clutter instead of out and out messy. Normally he did a better job of keeping his Woodside apartment tidy, but lately he had been too busy. Practice, meetings, interviews, planning sessions, photo ops and more practice had sucked up the last dregs of his free time, until he barely had a few minutes even to keep in touch with his family anymore.

Of course, if he had more time at home, there would be more mess needing cleaning. He supposed it evened out in some ways.

But today he'd managed to wedge open a slice of his schedule for an interview he actually anticipated with pleasure instead of resignation. Instead of talking to jaded music industry reporters on the hunt for shallow gossip material, he'd be discussing Breaker Street's debut CD with a young man who actually shared Rory's passion for music. Instead of gritting his teeth and reminding himself that he was doing all this to help his band, he could enjoy the fact that he was helping a friend spice up his class assignment. Rory whistled a few bars from Automatic Panic as he arranged his electronic keyboard and six-string acoustic guitar ready to hand for demo purposes.

Only then did it occur to him to glance in a mirror. Eh. He'd do. Jeans, a blue sleeveless t-shirt and a mane of dark hair that wasn't any more rumpled than usual. A buzz from the intercomm told him that his guest was right on time. "Hello, is that you Val?"

What is your relationship and history with music?

The realization has only just now hit me fully. I'm sitting with the culmination of my relationship with music in my hands.

Breaker Street's debut CD.

After delays, debates and massive amounts of hard work, I am finally holding one of the first pressings. The full release hits stores next week. Our videos are ready to debut, we have radio and magazine interviews set up, plus a live spot in Times Square for Good Morning America. You have to give Robbie Fellowes credit, he and his PR team know how to get exposure for his new acts. He's been dropping our name like mad for months.

But the whole thing didn't feel real to me until now. )

The sun on your skin
Or a summer storm?
Rain? Rain on your face
Rain that you can taste
Slowly as it drips

(flashback to June of 1998)

Rory had agreed to come with me on the Washington assignment, which was nice from more standpoints than just the readily available sex. The magazine that was leasing Ben Wentworth's illustrious photographic skills had also graciously agreed to pay an assistant to hump my equipment around and pose tiny in the corners of panoramic shots, and Rory had always been accommodating about both. Besides, hacking around the Olympic Peninsula for five months without sight of familiar company would annoy even the antisocial beast I can sometimes be.

Warning, there is nudity back hyar. )

I'm going with Rory Stone on this prompt, because he's got the best-developed set of NPCs in the form of his band, Breaker Street.

1. Who are the NPCs / supporting cast members in your character's life? (if you don't have any, feel free to invent some now!)

Junie Cabriano: second guitar, occasionally plays an electric cello.
Nelson "Nil" Cameron: Bass guitarist.
Marcus Kreske: Drums.
Sascha Brockmann: Keyboards.
Dave Rackley: Keyboards and backup percussionist.
Morrie Dubrowsky: Was the sound tech for their club gigs, is now trying to find his place among the technicians and producers at Serptichore Records, the company that signed the band.

He has a few others as well. Vince Gereghty, the man who's working on the studio production of Breaker Street's debut CD, is a character on loan to me from [livejournal.com profile] serptichore's mun, so I can't do anything too outrageous with him without prior approval. Ben Wentworth is a past lover of Rory's who's had a mention or two in prompts and RP and decided to speak up with some background stories just in the past couple of days. He could conceivably show up in the present day. Others will no doubt crop up as Rory's tale progresses.

More questions behind the cut )

Bonus points: Write a ficlet about one of your characters as told from the POV of one of their NPCs/supporting cast members.

This one flashes forward some months, to when Breaker Street are weeks into their first tour as the opening act for Sweet Christmas, one of Serptichore's headliner groups.

The rules are: Comment to this post and I will give you 5 subjects/things I associate you with. Then post this in your LJ and elaborate on the subjects given.

So to start off with, I got five from Val:

father - My father, Ruairí MacEibhir. My namesake, in fact, Rory is an Anglicized version and Stone a stage name I chose because MacEibhir's too easily mangled. Other than that ... he's my da. Always there for me in one way or another, I don't know what I'd be without him. He's the center around which my family orbits.

music - If you want me to elaborate on music, I could go on for some time. Suffice to say that for me music is true love and true frustration, the highs and the lows all blended. To meld notes and lyrics together, polish them with the rest of Breaker Street, each member adding a bit of his or her essence to it, then present the end result to a crowd hungry for the sound and emotion ... that's what makes me feel completely me.

fame - I've learned about fame on a small scale, as Breaker Street gained a reputation and following in the NYC club scene. If we're as lucky as we are good, we'll soon be learning about it on a larger scale. I'm equal parts excited and nervous about that prospect. It's ... strange, having people so focused on you. All kinds of strange.

Irish - Well. Yes, I am, exceedingly. I was born and raised in Connemara, and am one of a dwindling minority who speaks Irish Gaelic as a first language. My mother always said we were a nation of poets and warriors. I've tried to stick to the former, but I can be the latter if need demands.

cool - I'll take this as a compliment and thank you for it. I don't know how cool I really am ... I certainly have plenty of what Sascha calls dorky moments. But I think cool is at bottom a quality of liking yourself and being comfortable in your own skin. Which I do and am, most of the time.

And five more from Pippa )

Peter's five )

Another five from Jean-Paul )

You make people feel euphoric and dreamy. You're very addicting.

You definitely drive people to passion, lust, and even obsession.

While you are quite sensual, you are also comforting.

You sure know how to work your magic. It doesn't take long to get someone to love you.

... and now I have a craving.
