Well.

I have a rather mixed bag of political results cropping up, as it turns out, on my birthday.

On the one hand is President Obama. I don't fool myself that one man's election can fix this country overnight, and yet he carries the breath of possibilities that have seemed out of reach for eight long years.

On the other lies the travesty of anti-gay discrimination being written into the constitutions of California, Arizona ... I know people who will be touched directly by these awful pieces of legislation, and to them I say They will not stand. Like the bans on interracial marriages before them, they will not, must not stand. If the proponents of these measures think the fight is over, they'll be proven sorely wrong.

The sun has touched the horizon, but it still has a long climb ahead.

I know it's frustrating to see rights granted and then taken away but it's still change headed in the right direction. Look at Massachusetts for one and in other countries like Canada and the Netherlands...it's a global movement that the conservative, religious right can't fight forever.

They even lost out on the ridiculous anti-choice amendments in places like Colorado failed miserably.

Thank God common sense prevailed with those. They were just inane.

And yes, you are right. Fear and ignorance can't prevail forever. I keep recalling to mind of all the advances in human rights I've seen in my lifetime. Change will happen.

And these specific rights affect you more personally. I do understand that, baby. I hope you don't have to wait so long for that change to come.

Happy birthday, darlin'.

And be glad you don't live in a 'red' state or you'd have spent all day wantin' to bang your head (or maybe someone else's) against a damned wall.

Thank you, Laine.

Red states, blue states ... I do wish politics in this country got treated less like a sporting event or gladitorial contest. It makes no sense to drive wedges between factions who need to work together on the morrow.

I think it has more to do with the fact that even though this is one country, it's also fifty individual states that all have their own agendas. Try reconcilin' that big ol' mess into one mass...I'm usually surprised it runs as well as it does, all things considered.

It's the marriage-less adoption ban that bothers me more than the rest of it. There are other legal venues to secure the benefits of 'marriage'. I might gripe about Adam being an idiot sometimes (let's face it, he is one) but I've seen up close and personally how screwed up the adoption system in this country is, we don't need another roadblock to placing children with people who want them.

And hey, happy birthday man. How old are you?

So true, Peter. It infuriates me that those who insist they're "protecting" children refuse to see the harm they're doing them by refusing to allow them to be placed with people who would be competent, loving parents.

I'm thirty-three, a chara. And thank you.

A what? Between you and Zippy, I'm going to break babelfish one of these days. And you don't look that old.

A chara. "My friend" in Gaelic.

I come by it genetically, I'm afraid. My father certainly doesn't look his age.

At least that's nice, Zippy's usually calling me names in Yiddish. Then again, I'm usually annoying her in English...

Lucky you.

So millions of Californians went out of their way yesterday to deny the rights of others to be miserable and live with the pain of divorce...mission accomplished? May their next full physicals be void of any lube.

I blame you for the lack of cake in my day today.

Ah, but there are other rights that go along with that "right to misery". Frankly, I think they need to separate the religious aspects from the legal contract altogether.

A little bird told me that Cait is helping her friend Zippy bake honey cake, among other things. If you're nice, she might share.

I wasn't being entirely serious about that, you know. I happen to think it sucks just as much as you do and twelve years of Catholic school has left me with the thought that religion is pretty creepy. It's all on the level of Rosemary's baby as far as I'm concerned.

Who do you think you're talking to? I don't do nice.

I do know, Abby. I hope I didn't sound testy, but I've fielded phone calls from a handful of old friends who needed to vent their frustration.

Then you'll have to find some other means of acquisition. Could be tricky ...

You don't have a corner on that market.

I have interns and they have med students. It's not that tricky.
